Located in Staunton, VA, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley Newtown Baking and Pizza is a community food establishment that has been in operation for over ten years. Serving pastries and bread by day, and pizza and other wood-fired, Mediterranean inspired dishes by night, our diverse menu makes Newtown a favorite for locals and visitors alike. The day (bakery) and night service compliment one another, relying on a motivated and functional team to uphold the bakery and restaurant’s reputation with dedication to quality, delicious, and affordable food.

We are seeking a creative, empathetic, and self-driven Leader to join our dinner-service team and help us grow our business. An ideal candidate will be one with an interest in wood-fired cooking and a passion for and interest in seasonally-inspired and locally sourced cuisine.

The Head Chef is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day culinary operations of Newtown Baking and Pizza while ensuring the highest quality of food for our guests. This position is responsible for managing and supervising all dinner-service kitchen personnel, coordinating orders from various food purveyors and farmers, collaborating with our bakery team, and planning/executing a creative, locally-sourced, and seasonally-inspired menu.


  • Creates innovative menu items and specials to uphold core business brand and values.

  • Ensures all food and products are consistently prepared and served according to restaurant

    recipes, portioning, and cooking standards.

  • Analyzes and maintains food costs, quality, inventory and purchasing; assigns prices to menu


  • Establishes and controls the work schedule of all kitchen employees.

  • Communicates and collaborates with bakery staff in the planning and execution of breakfast and

    lunch service.

  • Knowledgeable and compliant with Virginia health code, safety, and restaurant policies and


  • Maintains clean, functional and sanitary work stations, kitchen and equipment.

  • Trains staff on required cooking methods, portions and quality.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive energy in the kitchen; inspires kitchen team and promotes

    growth of employees.

  • Able to communicate well with both back of house and front of house staff.

  • Leads in service and preparation.

  • Attends necessary management meetings and employee trainings.

  • Offers suggestions and processes for growth and improvement


  • Minimum 3 years’ commercial kitchen management experience; previous head and/or sous chef experience preferred.

  • Certificate or degree in Culinary Arts a plus.

  • Experience with wood-fired cooking preferred.

  • ServSafe or similar certification required (will allow time to acquire if not currently certified).

  • Ability to work flexible hours, in addition to normal business hours, as needed.

  • Team player; clear, honest, open communicator a must.

  • Ability to think quickly, multitask, and adapt to changing situations while maintaining the highest

    quality of product and other established standards.

  • Ability to navigate and utilize Microsoft Office Suite programs, Square point of sale (POS) system,

    and all other required operating machines (i.e. cooking machinery) desirable, but will train if


  • Passion for/interest in the development of seasonally-inspired menus and local sourcing.

    This is a full-time, exempt, year round position. Salary is commensurate with experience.

    This job operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as a wood-fired oven,

    induction burners, CVAP, slicer, steamer, mixer and knives. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, fire and noise. The noise level in the work environment can be moderate. Hazards may include, but are not limited to, cuts, burns, slipping, tripping, and minimal exposure to cleaning chemicals. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing 50 pounds or less. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.
